Fall is one of the best seasons of the year šš! Next best to spring I believe:). My kids love to watch the fall colors in the mountains and enjoy a long drive to the most beautiful spots in our area. Also fall season brings lots of festivals and traditions which bring a very warm feeling to everyone. From Halloween to Diwali and Thanksgiving, all the fun festivals for kids are reserved for Fall. That's also one of the reason why Fall is one of the best seasons of the year.
Last week we were discussing about changing seasons and were trying to learn about what are the changes that happen in Fall and other interesting facts. We were going on a walk with kids since it was not a rainy day. It was a beautiful fall day! Kids love to play with the fallen leaves at the park and were having fun jumping on piles of dried leaves. My little one wanted to collect some leaves and bring them home. And suddenly the idea of putting them to good use by making a simple art project with them came to my mind. It wa getting very cold and we had to come back home soon. This project could extend our fun time and also help to give them some screen free time I thought. Of course, art projects are a fun way to spend time indoors in these cold fall/winter days. You can also try this simple project with your kids at home and have some fall art fun!!
Read on to find out the supplies needed and instructions!!
So next time when you go for a walk with kids remember to collect some leaves for this project. Here are the other supplies you would need to do this project.
Tempera paint in red , orange , green , yellow
Wide paint brushes
Construction paper or card stock(A4 sheet in case card stock is not available handy)
some paper towels to wipe messy hands
Here are the different types of leaves that we had picked up.
Leaf Imprints using Tempera paints:
Step 1: Paint on the back side of leaf where you can see and feel the leaf veins. We can get better impressions if we paint on this side . Use any of your favorite colors like green , yellow or red to paint.
step 2: Press on the A4 sheet or card stock with the painted side to form an impression. This is like a natural leaf stamper for kids.
Using Crayons or colour pencils:
The other option is to use crayons or color pencils to color and trace on top of another paper.
Using crayons would be great for very young kids or preschoolers.
Pro Tip: If you hold the crayon as shown in the picture and color from the side you will be able to get better imprints rather than holding and coloring with pointed tip.
Here are some fun facts about fall season to share and discuss with kids before or after doing the art lesson:
Have you ever wondered why leaves change color in fall?
Leaves produce a pigment called chlorophyll which is responsible for the green color of the leaves. Chlorophyll absorbs all the other colors of whitelight such as sunlight and reflects only the green and yellow colors of sunlight. Hence the green color that is visible to our eyes. But leaves also contain other pigments like anthoxanthins or Xanthophyll which reflects yellow and Carotenoids which reflect yellow, orange or red.
Chlorophyll is produced in summer when there is plenty of sunlight and hence the color green. And in fall when there is less sunshine and shorter days, they stop producing chlorophyll and turn back to their original color of red, orange or yellow depending on the pigments present in them.
I found these resources to be very helpful in understanding and teaching the concepts of fall and color changing leaves. As well as to learn about the concept of light!! Color is infact all about light and reflection!!
