"Do you want to build a snowman? Come on let's go and play..." My kids love this song from frozen and also love building snowmen! But this time we made a different kind of snowman with craft paper and crayons instead of natural snow!:) It was mid-winter break and my kids wanted to do something fun at home since it was rainy and cold outside. So we made these cute snowmen and named them "Icy and Snowy".(They were reminded of the real snowmen we made during snow days!) We also hung them by our fireplace to keep them warm and later enjoyed drinking hot chocolate with them!!😊
This is super fun and easy craft to do with your kids. We can teach them to draw basic shapes like circles, lines, and curves. All these small activities can help build their fine motor skills, and teach them to hold their pencils and write in the future. Especially kids in preschool or early elementary would love to do this craft. As parents, we need to enjoy the process and strike up a conversation with our children while making this craft about the colors they want to choose or the shape of the hat that they want to put on the snowman. You can create stories and build their imagination. I'm sure they would have lots to tell you. So set aside some quality time for this activity. This craft would be ideal for preschoolers and even early elementary-going kids.
The supplies needed to create this craft are:
1. White construction paper or card stock
2. Pencil and Eraser to draw the shapes first
3. Black Sharpie or marker to outline and draw the eyes, mouth, and buttons
4. Crayons to color the scarf. Let the kids choose their colors to decorate the scarf.
5. Glue to stick the parts of the snowman together.
6. Yarn to hang them.
Time: Approx., 20 -30 mins. (Can be extended with some stories and imaginative play)
Here are the steps to create your papercraft snowman!
1. First, draw two circles for the head and body, with one circle larger than the other.
Next, draw two rectangles, with one of them larger than the other for the scarf. Then, draw a long, carrot-shaped triangle and draw a hat of your choice. We have chosen the Santa Claus hat since that is my children's favorite. Finally, draw the arms by making two long rectangles and adding shorter rectangles for the fingers. Color and design them however you like, or take inspiration from the images shown.
(Tip: Very small children may find it hard to draw circles, so it would be easier to use some available small circular objects and trace a circle with them. )
Don't forget to add the eyes, mouth, and buttons as shown while making the face and body of the snowman. Drawing the cute smiley face of the snowman is sure to bring a lot of giggles and grins to the faces of your little ones !!😊
2. Cut all of the pieces out as shown and have the separate parts ready.
(Please cut it out for your child and always supervise while using scissors for any craft activity).
3. Next, stick all the pieces together with glue. Arrange the cut pieces together to form the shape of a snowman. The small circle goes above the larger circle to form the head and body. The short rectangle piece goes on the neck part and the longer rectangle hangs under. Then, add the carrot nose on the face between the eyes and the mouth. Stick the hands to the edges of the larger circle (body) and finally, add the hat on the head.
4. You can spruce up the scarf by cutting up one of the ends of the longer rectangle into thin strips, as you can see in the completed image.
5. If you want to, you can make a hole in the hat and string yarn through it so you can hang it like a cute little ornament!
Hope you enjoyed making this craft with your kids. We will see you next time with another amazing craft adventure!
